Modern Luxury Bathroom – the Art of Interior Design

A modern luxury bathroom is everyone’s dream. But what actually makes the bathroom luxurious? I’ve previously written about luxury interior design in general and in this article I’ll talk about bathrooms specifically.

After a long busy day you may dream of having a hot bath with some candles and music. The feeling of being rid of the problems of the day, winding down and wanting to immerse yourself into the beauty of the space. What better then than your own hi-end bespoke bathroom? Especially one of these with a stunning instagrammable view.

As a Luxury Interior Designer , if I were to choose which spaces are my favourite to design…. I would say – modern luxury bathrooms.

Freestanding Bath

What makes a bathroom luxurious is a freestanding bath. It reminds me of an object in the gallery; standing in the middle of the space it’s indeed like a piece of art except this will be ready for your own SPA routine. When I’m picking a bath I’m actually selecting a piece of art. That’s why I have some favourite bath manufacturers that get influenced by fashion and art.

This way of thinking inspired me when I was designing this modern luxury bathroom in London (photo below). That project was located in Mayfair – which is one of my favourite luxury home locations in London.

Generous Space

To be able to design a truly luxurious modern bathroom you’ll need space. It’s the generous size that makes it special. When you have enough space the features can be prominently displayed and you can plan the layout well. Therefore, as an Interior Designer, I’ll have less restrictions and can come up with more striking designs.

Having said that I need to add that there are definitely more ways to make a small bathroom special too. To do so I’d go for a minimal toned look but would always make one feature very prominent and cool.

Smart Layout

When you walk into a well designed luxury bathroom everything looks like it’s in the right place. There’s space to relax, to get ready, put your clothes away, there’s even a place for a drink or a book to read. It feels like the designer knew exactly the perfect way for you to relax in your modern luxury bathroom. It’s important to remember about it when choosing your interior designer.

The View

A killer view – this is what makes the luxury bathroom complete. Look at this stunning view over London from the Shard – is there a better place to have a hot, bubbly bath? These bathrooms are perfect for a great Instagram shot that will make all your friends jealous.

Imagine you’d have this view in your own place instead of the hotel (where anyone can rent a room) – it would make your bathroom extra special.

Luxury Finishes

A modern luxury bathroom needs a luxury finish like marble, fine timber and metal.

Firstly, it’s important to use marble with caution. When used in excess it can feel overwhelming and over-designed. It’s better to leave some walls plastered (large windows help too). Less is more in this case. If you’re going for marble with strong veining – remember to limit the surface even more. Otherwise it’ll look far too busy.

Secondly, it’s good to think of the choice of metal in a consistent way. If there’s a significant type of metal used throughout the house it’s good to stick to it. If the handles and floor inlays are bronze it’s really chic to use it as well as for the taps and hooks in the bathroom. I always do this in my designs. Struggling to pick the right type of metal? Mood Lighting

The right mood lighting is key when you want to achieve perfect relaxation! Lighting can set the atmosphere in a stunning way. When using automatic lighting systems make sure that it allows you to change the stage from fully lit to a darker / romantic mood with one button. As a result you’ll have the control over the mood and the way you relax.

I use several tricks for a perfect bathroom lighting, for example:

  • LED mood light hidden behind the features
  • a feature big pendant light above the bath
  • make-up friendly vanity lights

Adding an Edge

If you want a modern luxury bathroom with an edge – the right use of contrast is crucial. For example: using black metal and light surfaces (or the opposite) can create the cool/rock & roll feel. It helps to achieve the masculine “Brooklyn” look of a perfect Bachelor Pad.

Bathroom for Two

Have you ever tried to get ready for a party with your partner in one bathroom? There’s something nice about it – unless you have to fight for the sink! Double basins and a large mirror are the way to go.

Do you remember all these Hollywood films where the couple is getting ready in front of the mirror? Need any more convincing?

Some people like to take it to the next level and opt for two luxury bathrooms instead of one (one for each of the partners) but I personally like the idea of one big modern bathroom with a double sink. More romantic!

Summary – Modern Luxury Bathroom

To sum up, a well designed modern luxury bathroom is a perfect oasis for relaxing and winding down after a busy day. There are several things that any hi-end bespoke bathroom should have:

  • a freestanding bath
  • generous space
  • smart layout
  • the view
  • luxury finishes
  • mood lighting

When I’m designing modern luxury bathrooms for my clients I’m always going for a minimal but strong esthetic with a bit of fun.
