So, you’ve been googling to find some minimal interior designers? Well, I’m definitely one of them. As you probably noticed, there’s not a lot of us though. It’s because minimalism in interior design is not yet as popular as in architecture. Steve Jobs saw the Apple brand as sleek forms that make your life easier and less complicated. I see the same when designing interiors. It’s because I believe you shouldn’t over-complicate things. I’m a minimal luxury interior designer based in London and I’ll tell you all about minimalist interior design style and characteristics. Furthermore, I’ll talk about minimalist loft interior design.
I’m One of the Few Minimal Interior Designers in London
Surprisingly, there’s not too many minimal interior designers in London. Not a lot of companies dare to go this way because of the more traditional taste of established clients. Therefore I happen to be one of the few minimal designers. I love the beauty of simple forms, details, colours and functions. For me, the true sophistication comes in the form of minimal spaces and objects. I’ve been designing minimal and luxury houses all around the world such as – London, Hong Kong and New York and now also teach interior design. I can clearly see that people love minimal spaces more and more.
Minimalism was always present in our culture but only now it’s becoming really popular. You can already see it in a lot of retail spaces as well as hotels and restaurants.
Who are Minimal Interior Designers?
Minimal interior designers like me are creators confident so they don’t need to add any unnecessary embellishments. The main design concept is so strong that it DOESN’T need a ton of accessories to hide behind. It’s similar to natural beauty – in most cases the natural look is far better than an overdressing one or with too much make-up.
Likewise, getting the best out of the architectural space is the most important thing in my work. Revealing the existing, hidden beauty of the space is my specialty. I love looking for the perfect balance in the project. The result is a serene and truly unique space.
Minimalist Interior Design Characteristics All Designers Should Know
Minimalism is a holistic approach and you can see it throughout all stages of the interior design project. There’s a few things that should be a top priority to all minimal interior designers. So, here’s a list of minimalist interior design characteristics:
- Initial planning – minimal thinking helps in making the project more sustainable. The start of a minimal project is a great main idea for the entire space.
- Functional layout – minimalism is all about functionality. If something is uncomfortable or makes daily life harder – it has to go. Layout of a house has to be smart and adjusted to your modern lifestyle.
- Minimal forms in joinery and details – smart simplicity always catches the eye. That’s why I always design bespoke and unique joinery forms with beautiful minimal details.
- Mood lighting instead of decoration – minimal forms beautifully lit can make a far grater impression than an excess of accessories.
- Minimal furniture that reflect the architecture – everything has to be in sync – including; furniture, lighting and architectural features. Minimalism has a lot to do with consistency.
- Natural materials – minimal interior design works really well with natural materials. They give the softness and home atmosphere to minimal forms. Natural materials are minimal interior designers’ favourites.
- Consistency in choosing materials – As a designer I have to be confident and choose one metal for all the fixtures – like in this fashion blogger house. The same rule applies to wood, paint colours and fabrics. Too many finishes usually suggest that the designer wasn’t confident enough about the design and tried to hide it.
- Invite the natural light in – minimalism in interior design is all about making the best out of the natural resources – natural light especially.
Minimalist Interior Design Style is Good for Wellbeing and the Environment
I really believe that surrounding yourself with minimal forms and reducing clutter in your home improves your wellbeing. Recent trends of minimalism and de-cluttering are also helping the environment. It not only helps us to reduce the waste that goes into environment but also simply makes us happier. Living in a minimal and conscious way helps us on so many levels.
Clients ask me to help them de-clutter their homes through design. That’s one of the advantages of hiring a minimal interior designer. You’ll gain a lot of hidden storage that will make your home a serene space you love.
Minimalist Loft Interior Design
Have you ever dreamed of a minimal industrial New York loft? The one with a great view? The one where you can visualise waking up in the morning, holding a cup of coffee observing the city waking up. Just like in movies! For this reason, it was one of my dreams to interior design a minimalist loft.
That’s why I was so excited when an opportunity came to design this New York bachelor pad. The idea was to create a minimal space that would also have an industrial edge to it. As a result the minimal bachelor pad is a great home that reflects the spirit of New York.
As you can see minimalism in interior design doesn’t have to be cold and uninviting, which some people might fear. Modern minimal interior designers like me, always make sure that the newly designed home is a cosy and serene oasis for you and your loved ones.
Questions and Answers
Minimalist decorating style or minimalist interior design style is a way of making a big impression with minimal resources. I use it a lot in my work as a luxury interior designer. It’s all about making considered choices. For example: picking furniture, designing simple joinery shapes, limiting the colours and most of all, paying attention to functionality. It’s the style that’s opposite to cluttered, over-designed spaces.
Minimalist interior design is a philosophy to get rid of all unnecessary distractions. So, start with… de-cluttering. That’s the first step for a beautiful minimal home that you’ll love. You’ll feel more balanced and calm. Then, add a lot of hidden and concealed storage. For example: build out a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe on one of the walls. The less objects you have outside the storage – the better. Connect spaces like kitchen and dining – to achieve an open plan. If you’re unsure ask a minimal interior designer like me for help. Keep the walls, floor and joinery in calm, natural colours. Limit finishes: pick one type of wood, one metal and one carpet type for the entire house.
